Join Desktop Gets a New Client
Join Desktop is a free and open source program for performing dozens of different actions remotely on other devices. For example, it lets you see notifications from your Android phone on your desktop and even reply to them. You can also send large files between devices and read your SMS from the computer, among other things. In addition, it can be used in conjunction with Tasker to automate actions across several devices.
The latest update has brought a number of improvements. First of all, the developer joaomgcd rebuilt the Join website from scratch and now it works with Firefox and Edge as well -- previously it only worked with Chrome. But more importantly, the app now comes with a desktop client that lets you do even more stuff. For example, it automatically syncs your clipboard between your phone and PC and can even run shell commands.
Another new feature is that it now uses your local network when possible to transfer data, which should improve file transfers and give you more privacy by not having to send everything through the web. And lastly, it offers a new slate for Tasker so you can send push notifications to specific devices or teams.
The program is distributed as an AppImage, which means you can download it, make it executable and run it on your Linux system without needing a package manager and without altering any system libraries or preferences. To do this, you can use tools like appimagetool and linuxdeployqt.
